EPOXY VS FLOOR PAINT

Big-box floor paint and a DIY kit look great for a season. Then the hot tires lift it, and the peeling starts at the door.

Thickness

Epoxy: 20–60+ mils

Garage floor paint: 3–5 mils

Prep

Epoxy: Diamond grinding

Garage floor paint: Etch or nothing

Hot tire pickup

Epoxy: Resistant

Garage floor paint: Common failure

Lifespan

Epoxy: 15–20+ years

Garage floor paint: 1–3 years

Repair

Epoxy: Spot repair and recoat

Garage floor paint: Strip and start over

THE HONEST VERDICT

Real epoxy is a two-part chemical cure poured many times thicker than paint, over a diamond-ground slab. That's the whole difference between four months and fifteen years.

WHEN GARAGE FLOOR PAINT IS THE RIGHT CALL

There isn't really a case for paint on a slab you care about.

GOOD TO KNOW

Why did my DIY epoxy kit peel?
Almost always prep. Big-box kits rely on acid etching, which doesn't open a hard-troweled slab. Without a ground profile the resin has nothing to grip.
Can you fix a failing painted floor?
Yes — we grind the old coating completely off, repair what's underneath and pour a proper system over it.

Keep comparing
